Double Punishment: The Case of Victor Morales
“He wants to fight for his life here. And sometimes that’s all it takes: a desire to fight.” — S.E.A.
Victor Morales, a Montreal-based musician, was to be deported to Chile on February 8, despite living in Canada for more than 30 years. He is one of many local residents who face unjust “double punishment” as non-citizens who also have criminal records and can be deported. Victor, however, won a stay of deportation this past Monday, with the support of his family, friends, church, as well as members of No One Is Illegal. For more context about double punishment, we also spoke with No One Is Illegal member Sarita Ahooja, who has been involved with direct support work with Victor Morales.
